The Avocado Craze
Who would have thought that the green fruit, which was more of an occasional delight a rough ten years ago, will soon be in short supply? Avocados have become so much of a commodity that nowadays we can’t even imagine going to a store and not being able to get them. There is no denying that everyone loves a little bit of avocado, but can we thank for the hipsters, or first of all the New Age devotees, the yogis and yoginis, the health food movement, or who exactly? Well, I have to disappoint you, because the reason behind the success of the super food is not going to be revealed now. However, if you want a peek into how crazy exactly we really are about the green wonder then keep on reading, because these are some of the craziest ways in which you can honour thy avocado and appease your hunger for the green softy:
An entire place dedicated to avocados, yes, you can apparently get avocados used as a substitute for bread in sandwiches, avocado on sandwiches, omelette á la avocado, avocado on avocado, liquid avocado, and the list of green dishes goes on and on. The first ever avocado restaurant in the world was opened in Brooklyn, NY, this year, and rumour has it that their supply sold out in three hours. Of course the old continent couldn't stay without such a wonder either, so no need to worry, you don’t have to hop across the pond to indulge in your avocado fetish, we’ve got you covered: The Avocado Show is in Amsterdam, and in London, we have Naughty Avocado and Belli Freschi!
Although the North hasn’t got its own all avocado restaurant yet, rumour has it that The Avocado Show wants to come to Manchester too and open a restaurant in the near future. Unfortunately we don’t have information on the when and whereabouts yet…in the meantime, if you want the best avocado on toast in Leeds, then you want to visit Mrs Atha’s Leeds.
Have you ever thought about what happens to the tons of avocado skin thrown away? No worries, if not, because I’m about to tell you! The Truman Cafe, in Australia, has come up with something rather unusual to tackle the extreme amounts of waste. Whether it is genius or just another hipster invention, their take on a coffee cup is definitely unique – they use the skins. We are not entirely convinced about the functionality considering the thinness of avocado skins, but each to their own - maybe we’ll see more of this in the future if sustainability really becomes the norm. However, the after taste of the coffee is still questionable if we think about it! So, if you happen to be in Oz then try this only if you are as much of a hardcore avocado fan as Melbournians apparently are.
Let’s move on from the edible delights, eating avocados is so last year anyways! According to recent trends you can admire the green goodness on your wall in the form of a painting, and if you think your ‘cado is still not getting the proper attention it deserves, then you may want to wander into the territory of arts and crafts.
As everyone knows, protecting your avocado from cold weather and environmental stressors is key…or is it? Well, not exactly, but if you need a little help in ripening it, because it can be quite challenging sometimes to define when in a store which avocado is ripe enough to eat, then this clever invention is just what you are looking for.
Avocado Arts and Crafts
Surprise, surprise - arts and crafts cannot be an exception when it comes to the areas conquered by the majestic green fruit, and we are so here for it. If you want to adorn your walls with avocado, because having an avocado sock is not enough appraisal, then you need to head over to Etsy right now and check these out. Of course, there is no shortage in all sorts of avocado related fashion items either; just type avocado in Etsy’s search box and get ready to be amazed!
No Need to Pity the Pit
To continue along the lines of Avo-Art and what can one do with the different parts of the avocado, we can establish that there is no limit to what the creative brains can dream up. So on that note, another good find are these little druid like carvings by Jan Campbell. It is strange to think that avocado is an exotic fruit, and still the pits in their new form are somewhat reminiscent of celtic art. This is not to say that Celtic is not special, but the motifs for that matter are not exactly from the warmest of climates unlike the fruit itself. However, I kind of like these little meditating bearded men figures that have a peaceful look about them. Plus, just like any wooden item, this one has its own special colour too, which I think is gorgeous.
And who said only the pits can be carved? The green madness continues with another artsy approach, and shows that even when we thought we can’t find more avocado embellishments, turns out that the realms of the internet are inexhaustible, and there is always one more avo-wonder to obsess over. Such as these mesmerising avocado carvings by gaku carving on Instagram.
A Special Disease
And finally, just to make it extra clear how serious our avocado addiction is, it worth mentioning that UK surgeons issued a warning on a special new disease which is caused by avocados, and all hardcore avocado fans may be in danger. And this is none other than cutting ourselves when trying to dig the pit of the avocado out with a sharp knife :D Yes, it has become so common to seriously injure our hands when the knife slips that we have been warned by healthcare professionals to be more cautious! Can this get any crazier than this? We don’t think so :)
At this point we are pretty sure that when current trends will be looked at in a hundred years' time, one may very well think that avocados were adored in our time as gods. Speaking of which, I am going to go now and take my daily dose, so warm hugs to all the fellow avocado worshippers out there, you are not alone.
