Make Something Plain Less Ordinary

Make Something Plain Less Ordinary

Today I popped in to REW, to see an old friend and fellow small business owner. If you don’t know about her then you really should.

Rachel Emma Wright launched her business back in June 2011 but has been serving the fashion forward crowd for many years. I knew her as the really trendy girl that wore something new and funky every Friday night. Rachel started creating clothing in her spare bedroom after studying milinary at the Epsom School of Art. She later moved her business into a shed at the bottom of the garden and now owns a gorgeous studio in Tamworth, Staffordshire. Here, new designs are born, created and luckily for us we can pop in any time and pick up a unique piece.

If you already know about REW you will know she is synonymous with the REW scarf. This amazing idea was generated when, not wanting to tie a scarf around her 4 year old daughters neck after witnessing another child in the playground have theirs being pulled by another child, Rachel create a simple, stylish and unique button up collar. From that day the scarf has gone from strength to strength. Each season designs and fabrics are updated and an original REW scarf can be spotted a mile off. The business has continued to grow over the last 6 years and Rachel has had commissions from Estee Lauder and won the Theo Paphitis's Small Business Award, which has catapulted her even further.

I’ve been watching the new collections appear over on Facebook and Instagram and needed to see them in the flesh. Rachel and her team have just shot the new range ready for promotion and they really are very lovely. I desperately want the gingham coat modelled by me below. Or, maybe the denim one? Its so hard to decide. These coats are so versatile and coming in a range of fabrics it is easy to get one for each season. The gingham one is made in brushed cotton so lovely and cosy for the colder days but they look so stylish, and they have big pockets!!! Perfect.

Whilst in the studio it is easy to have your head turned with all of the fabulous stock. Rachel’s daughter, who I mentioned earlier, is now all grown up and has gone into business herself with It Was From. A chip off the old block, after years of watching her mum, Issy was inspired to create a company who source and sell stylish gifts from all over the world. Many of these items are completely unique and will have people asking you “where was it from”? Issy, a young mum herself now has curated a range of cool products including, trendy homeware, jewellery and very cute kids pom pom hats. Issy has a great eye for detail and I got myself a gorgeous statement necklace from It Was From when she first launched.

Rachel is clearly very proud of Issy and rightly so, a beautiful studio space has been created and both sets of products sit perfectly together. People pop in like me to browse and purchase gifts or a new piece of clothing to go out on Saturday night whilst usually stopping for a natter too.

Rachel also uses the studio to host workshops. I was lucky enough to run my Vintage Paper Styling Workshop there last July and Rachel has the fabulous ‘The Work Bench London’ doing a ring-carving workshop in October this year.

Rachel is passionate about business, learning from scratch as she has gone along, she is now an advocate for other women in business. I for one have been inspired by Rachel’s story and will often message her for advice or tips, which she is only too happy to share. On the website you will find her blog where she keeps us updated with the business, new products and exciting news.

It really is so lovely to have such talent on my doorstep and, if you are not local, REW deliver worldwide (except the cup of tea and chat can’t be posted) so if possible, pop in to see what takes your fancy.
